One of my favorite places to visit from time to time is O’Serrato.com.  OttO is definitely a master of making blinkies!  Plus if you don't like anything he has, (I seriously doubt that you won't) you can always check out his fellow ring members to find what you like.

What Happened Next.

Good Afternoon!

Wednesday, I posted that I would be barbecuing dinner later that day.  Well, as luck would have it, it started to rain shortly after I put the meat on the grill. :(

Fortunately, the gods of rain worked with me.  :)  It rained intermittently, and allowed me to cook the spareribs almost to perfection.

I say almost because I miscalculated how hot the coals were and I burnt the one side of one set of the ribs.  But it all worked out for the best because the second set was grilled to a near state of bliss.  ;)

Another 70 Years to Go!

Good Afternoon!

I certainly hope everyone has had a safe and happy time celebrating 230 years of freedom.  Me?  I spent the day slowly grilling hot dogs, pork chops, and chicken.  Today, I am supposed to fix spareribs on the grill.  Since it is so oppressively hot, I’m not looking forward to firing up the grill again. :(

On the upside, however, I finally got a chance to do some basic maintainence on my blog, but the dashboard is acting like the summer heat is getting to it.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everything will work out for the better.

I’m going to backup my stuff now and see what happens. ttfn

3 Interesting Facts About the Belmont Stakes

Yes, I know that the race has come and gone, but I still have found 3 interesting facts about the Belmont Stakes from wikipedia.org that I would like to tell you about:

#1.  Until 1996, the traditional post parade song was, “Sidewalks of New York.”  In 1997, “Theme from New York, New York” was sung instead.  Unfortunately, I don’t know whether or not if the “Theme from New York, New York” was sung this year or not.  It probably was.

#2.  Due to anti-betting legislation, in the state of New York, the Belmont Stakes was closed down form 1911 to 1912.

#3.  Belmont Stakes originally follow the the English tradition of racing clock-wise until 1921.

Triple Crown, Part Three

My apologies.  Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was not able to blog on Saturday about the Belmont Stakes.  It is just as well, because I did not get to see the race anyway, but I did get to see the Acorn Stakes.  :)

The most amazing thing about the coverage of the race is that they had live coverage of Barbaro’s recovery every few minutes, while not a single word about Bernardini was shared with the audience.

Of course that could have changed while I was out picking up my sister.  I don’t know.  :shrug:  Oh, well.

My losing streak continues.  I rooted for Hello Liberty in the Acorn Stakes-- shout out to Bushfire for winning instead.  And I hoped that Bluegrass Cat would win, but I'll have to give my props to Jazil for winning.  :)

There is always next year.  ;)

Writer Beware's Twenty Worst Agents

It would seem I have missed a big literary storm concerning Absolute Write and Ms. Barbara Bauer.  To help shed light on the matter everyone is being asked to link to Writer Beware’s list of Twenty Worst Agents over at www.sfwa.org. 

It’s a crying shame that Absolute Write is lost to us.  I found some really great articles over there.  I hope that Absolute Write is able to find a new home soon.

Happy Anniversary!

Yay!  It has been exactly 365 days since my first post!  Yay!  I am so happy! 

This past year has really been exciting to me-- my confidence in my writing and my ability to call myself a writer has improved.  I’m more active in my online communities.  I’m more organized, and I’m more willing to take risks.

I also noticed that I’ve become addicted to memes, and quizzes.  If it were possible I’d step into Arsenio Hall’s shoes for a moment and smack my own hand and say, “BAD HOST!” but then, like Arsenio, I’d also have to take my hand back and say, “Psyche!” 

It’s my goal to be more consistent about posting for the next year, but I’m not going to beat myself up about it, either.

Page Flakes

I found this new site that is still being beta tested, but has real potential. It's called Page Flakes and it is a feed reader that acts like a portal, but will allow you to share content with either the whole world, just your friends and family memebers, or just keep it private.

You don't have to signup to use the service, but if you want Page Flakes to remember the layout of items that you want to use, you do have to sign up. The features include bookmarks, a mini browser, and it gives you access to services like box.net storage, and flickr-- just to name a few.

Veinte de Mayo

Yay!  Today is the day of Preakness Stakes.  While I’m waiting for the race, I looked up some facts at Wikipedia.org:

#  The Preakness’s first race ever was in the Pilmico Racecourse in Baltimore, MD, full two years before the Kentucky Derby was ever run.

#  George “Spider” Anderson is the first African-American jockey to win the Preakness in 1889.

#  The Preakness was run at two different tracks in in New York state-- the Morris Park Racetrack in Bronx, and the Gravestand track in Brooklyn.

#  Because 26 horses entered the Preakness Stakes in 1918, the race was run in two divisions, which resulted in two winners.

Well, I’m gonna go since the race is getting started, I’m hoping Barbaro!

The first Kentucky Derby, May 17th 1875

Just cruising around the net today, and I came across this nifty site-- www.blackfacts.com.  Evidently, this day in history, in 1875, The first Kentucky Derby is won by African American jockey Oliver Lewis riding the horse Aristides. 14 of the 15 jockeys in the race are African Americans.

Joe's Blog Six-Pack

Writer's Blogs is the theme of my six-pack:

At Last, Writers Beware Blog! is a resource for new writers compiled by A. C. Crispen and Victoria Strauss.  They want to help new writers to avoid the slippery slope of writing scams, and learn the ins and outs of writing.

Crimson City is a blog that exists within the fictional alternate universe devised by published writer Liz Maverick.  You definitely have to start at the begining of the blog, which is June 2005 in the archives, or you’ll be lost.  It’s definitely worth the time to read all the entries.  I’ve got my fingers crossed that they will continue the series beyond the six that have been written already.

Donna Hill’s blog is my next choice for the six-pack.  I discovered Ms. Hill’s writing after reading “Rosie’s Curl and Weave.”   I look forward to reading some of her newer works. 

Hackman-Adams is another blog shared by two writers.  Their tagline says it all, "THE PERILS OF WRITING WITH A (MALE) CO-WRITER."

Paperback Writer is Lynn Viehl’s baby.  It’s a treasure box jam-packed with information, ideas and inspiration on how to write.  I love visiting this site and exploring it. 

Raspberry Latte rounds out my six-pack.  Each day, Ms. Stacey Penny consistenly and neatly writes about her life as a writer, what she has read, and just a little bit about her family.  If only I could write so well and so prolifically. 

As you can see, there is a whole slew of blogs that I have yet to mention, and I’m going to sit down one day and organize the rest of them into manageble bits of six for future six-packs.

Ah, yes!  I’m a day late and a dollar short.  I celebrated Cinco de Mayo toting my momma around town looking for a new shop, buying a designer jacket, and having the same old boring lunch at one of the fast food restaurants. 

Today, I learn there were some celebrations of cinco de mayo that didn’t involve going to the bar and acting the fool.  Well, that’s okay, I’ll just save what I have learned for next year.  In fact, that will be one of my projects write up what I know about cinco de mayo for next year. 

Besides, today is the Kentucky Derby!  The jockeys are getting ready to mount up even as I speak. 

I’ve never betted at any of these games-- good thing too!  I’ve never chosen the winner.  Maybe my luck will change this year.  Oooh, I just saw one of the guitarists for ZZ Top!  Some guy is playing along with his harmonica.
